Nigerian Police need to be generating revenue

If the government is serious about fighting bribery and corruption, then it should reshape the concept of policing in the country. Why do I feel like Nigerian Police is the only huge body that is not generating revenue?
Most of the cases of bribery and corruption in this country are being patronized by police. Most of us were compelled to be corrupt because that’s the only way we can act normally in Nigeria. Whenever there is a case and police involved, then an incidence of bribery and/or corruption will likely occur.
I carefully looked at the structure of policing in Nigeria. The revenue allocation for administrative duties of Police Service Commision is relatively inadequate due to Nigeria’s high population demand. More interesting is that there is no reliable and formal source of revenue generation in Nigerian Police.
For example, bail is free, if you pay for it, it is corruption, what is the logical wisdom behind saying that bail is free? Therefore when you go to a police station to get someone’s bail, you pay for it in reality, but it is free. Think about it, all the police services are free. I couldnt find one that is not. Have you ever seen a police receipt?, where you pay for certain service and you were issued a receipt? I have never seen one.
On the other hand, the police are the most underfunded, State Governors and some “Big men” donate patrol cars for them, state governments usually build police stations, now the money collected from citizens due to breaking rules as a form of corruption is used to fuel their patrol cars and other administrative duties. Basically more than 90 percent of the money collected by police from citizens goes to administrative works. Simple example, you have an accident, you have to pay police to take you to hospital, someone owes you money and is not willing to pay, you take him to police, you have to “dash” a portion of such money to the police, etc.
The point is, police are our teachers, in some way, we do not learn from them, but they help keep us checked. If we are really serious about fighting corruption, then we have to rewrite the structure of policing in this country. It is very easy to come up with revenue generation stream for police, because among all the security forces, police are the ones we relate the most. Now, we can come up with suggestions such as;
1. Bail fee or booking fee for every case registered to the police
2. Burglary alarm install and management for offices and homes
3. Charging fees to non-residents who wreck in another town
4. Taxes/fees on all alcohol/ammunition sold in the city
5. Public safety fees for new constructions and outdoor assets
6. Offering self defence classes for a fee
7. Pay per call police charges for police help line
8. Charges for Tint Permit
9. Charges for Police Report
10. Charges for special protection of big personalities
11. For breaking simple rules in public, between the neighbourhood or at work places, there should be fixed charges.
Some of these suggestions might be there for long, but they are not formal, so they are regarded as corruption to the citizens and even the police. Therefore, it is high time police have a receipt for the benefit of all of us. However, If the government can provide adequate fund for the administrative works of the police, it will be fine, after all, we are paying taxes that cover our security.
