Unless we stop electing incompetent fellows as lawmakers, our society may never catch up.

Ideally the legislators are potentially the most important figures when a society wants to outgrow her counterparts.  For our dear society, it is not like that. We send people to represent us when we want to reward an obedient party member, or to resolve a conflict between to politicians, or when someone happens to be the favourite son and many other unnecessary excuses.  But all along, we are drowning ourselves, for the legislative is a place for people who know what their society really need. Most of the people we send end up sleeping in public, some do not understand the language of cummunication. While our counterpart societies' legislators are busy presenting better policies that will benefit their regions and put it on top of all others, our lawmakers are nowhere to be traced. We send such hopeless people to the Houses to the extent that, in the end, we loose everything. These are people who do not have inner connection with their society, people who cannot see what thei...

Nigerian Police need to be generating revenue

If the government is serious about fighting bribery and corruption, then it should reshape the concept of policing in the country. Why do I feel like Nigerian Police is the only huge body that is not generating revenue? Most of the cases of bribery and corruption in this country are being patronized by police. Most of us were compelled to be corrupt because that’s the only way we can act normally in Nigeria. Whenever there is a case and police involved, then an incidence of bribery and/or corruption will likely occur. I carefully looked at the structure of policing in Nigeria. The revenue allocation for administrative duties of Police Service Commision is relatively inadequate due to Nigeria’s high population demand. More interesting is that there is no reliable and formal source of revenue generation in Nigerian Police. For example, bail is free, if you pay for it, it is corruption, what is the logical wisdom behind saying that bail is free? Therefore when you go to a police station ...

The Niger Delta People have a reason to fight

The Niger Delta has long been a crucible of conflict, resentment, and resistance. As someone from Nigeria’s northern region, I confess I once misunderstood the people of the Niger Delta. We were misled to perceive them as greedy, hostile, and unwilling to share “our” collective oil wealth. We believed their struggles were unjustified, their militancy unprovoked. But that belief collapsed when I began to ask difficult questions about the realities of that region—questions born from observing similar patterns of marginalization across the country. Today, I understand that Niger Deltans are not irrational agitators. They are victims of systematic neglect, political oppression, and economic exploitation. What appears to be militancy is a cry for justice that has echoed for decades but fallen on deaf ears. A Region Rich in Oil, Poor in Justice Despite being the economic engine of Nigeria—producing over 80% of the nation’s government revenue—the Niger Delta remains shockingly underdevelo...

A Way to Burum burum

Image
It was a sunny day, hot of course, I was bored, tired and wanted something adventurous. Then I got a surprising invitation from my father, to join him visit his mother, my grandmother. I accepted, because I love it! I always wanted to see my grandmother, she was kind, caring and all. She loved me so much. When she passed away, a part of me was gone, a part where I feel loved, protected, pampered and elevated. I missed her so much that I cried and cried, i still vist her grave when i visit the village. It was around 12:00 noon when we headed to my father's "Kauye" (Kauye-a word meaning "Village" in Hausa Language ), it is about 85 km to the south the city of Kano : a city in   Northern Nigeria . A village with abundant mountains or rocks (I cant seem to differentiate). There are two routes to my village (my father's village) as far my father's driving is concerned, we usually go for the one with the shorter distance, where we pass through Karfi, then of...
